“Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.” Zechariah 8:23
Say you don’t see missions and the GRAND Commission in the Old Testament? I can hardly open my Bible that I don’t see evidence that our Lord wants the whole earth evangelized! There are commands to His people, and prophecies about all the people of the world, in every language, every tribe, every island, and every nation hearing about Him all through the Old Testament.
And since you asked, I’ll give you one I found this morning. It has been there all the time and I have no doubt read it before. But this time as I read Zechariah I must have been paying a bit better attention.
Do you ever talk back when you read God’s Word? I don’t mean argue with Him or contend with the Almighty. (I do that enough but that’s between me and Him.) I mean when you read a phrase like “we have heard”, the question came in my mind “Who told you? Where have you heard?”
And since “many people and strong nations” who asked that question in chapter 8, from “all languages of the nations” did not speak up and answer me, I began to speculate. Who would be likely to tell the Gentiles (nations) that God is with and for the Jews? Who would declare that He has chosen JERUSALEM, of all places, to be the only city He called Holy.
First of all, I began to eliminate those who would NOT be telling that good news;
The Mormons would tell you it is Salt Lake City and you will be a god one day and have your own little planet.
The Islamic Arabs would get closer than that! They know that city is holy but they hate the Jew.
Catholic would say Rome is the city and Mary and the Pope have to help you get to God.
Unfortunately even the government of the United States will not believe that the Jew is God’s chosen race and will no longer stand for Israel’s exclusive right to that City of David. So they will not tell the world.
How then shall they hear? Who will tell the nations in our day?
It is the Evangelical Christians who know the good news that Jesus, the Messiah of the Jews is the hope of the world. It is Evangelical Christianity that seems to be the only true friend the Jew has today.
So that means you and I need to give earnest heed to the command we say we believe. We must increase our efforts, we must intensify our labors, and we must expend renewed energy to finish getting the Gospel to the uttermost part of the earth. In the words of our Lord thru the mouth of another of His prophets: we must “spare not, lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes;” (Isaiah 54:2)
God states the fact that one day, folks who are today in heathen ignorance and pagan illusions will hear that “salvation is of the Jews” –the Jewish Messiah. It is not just wishful thinking on God’s part. It is prophecy, history written before it happens. But it will happen!
The question is: will YOU be a part of the fulfillment? What are you doing to get the good news to the uttermost part of the earth IN OUR LIFETIME? Let’s press on. Let’s keep on keeping on for Jesus’ sake.
